Seesaw / Teeter Totter and Shelter installed at the Townsend River Walk & Arboretum
Over the past month the elves have been busy adding some additional fun to the Children's Discovery Garden. Rodney & Allison Pearson and Mark Seder designed, installed and tested the great additions just in time for the Christmas Holiday. The idea stealing, planning and installation took place in only two and a half months and what a fantastic addition to the play area.
Read below to see how this all came about.
Seesaw / Teeter Totter
What does: Barga, Italy; Knoxville, TN; and Hurricane Helene have in common with the Townsend River Walk & Arboretum?
During a recent trip to Barga, Italy there was a seesaw that looked like something we needed at the TRWA. After sending the pic to Allison she sent me a pic of a similar seesaw at Lakeshore Park in Knoxville that she had just visited. We thought that this was a sign that we need one at the TRWA. About the same time Hurricane Helene hit and broke a large branch from a maple tree at the Heritage Center. Rodney and Allison took two large sections of that branch and then Rodney ripped one of them in half. One half became a bench we added at the Children's Discovery Garden and the other is now the sitting beam of the seesaw.

Not to be out done the next big kids takes it for a spin. Looks like Rodney is a bit frightened that Allison might bump him off the seesaw!

Shelter
Allison has been wanting to add an area that kids could build and enjoy their own shelter. After doing some clearing work the middle of October we found the perfect spot to build the framework for it. Allison and Rodney already had cedar rails that they had crafted and by the last week of October the framework was put into place and ready for use.
The idea is for kids to be able to create a shelter / hideout / cabin / fort, expand on it then have fun playing in it.
