For the second year in a row I had the pleasure of working with Wanda DeWaard, Cornelius DeWaard and a group of seven students from the Ohio State University Break Away Program.
After a rainy start we were able to make a huge dent in the hillside behind the porta-john. Invasive plants such as: Privet, Multiflora Rose, Japanese Bush Honeysuckle and Honeysuckle Vine, English Ivy, Euonymus and more were cleared giving the large Tulip Poplar and Mulberry Trees room to expand and grow. The opening of this area will allow better airflow and provide a better environment for future native plants to thrive.
The students were introduced to several of the invasive plants that are common to this area. They were then shown several techniques to remove invasive plants including: tree pullers, using loopers or hand saw then daubing the stump with glyphosate and of course hand pulling. They put their hearts and backs into it and made short work of the invasives in this area.
The Volunteers at the TRWA want to Thank Wanda, Cornelius, and the Ohio State group for doing such a great job. I look forward to having them back again next year!
