2019 - A Monumental Year for the Townsend River Walk and Arboretum

2019 has been a tremendous year of growth at the Townsend River Walk and Arboretum.  From the installation of new Arboretum Signs to the new partnerships with Keep Blount Beautiful & The Little River Watershed Association, it has been a year of change and growth.  

A special shout out goes to these volunteers who seemed to be at every 2019 TRWA event come rain or shine and they deserve a tremendous applause for there dedication throughout 2019 at the Townsend River Walk & Arboretum.  Combined they contributed over 600 volunteer hours to the River Walk in 2019!

Memoriam Benches Installed

Master Gardner's Help with TRWA Maintenance

A large section of the River Walk was cleared of invasives with the combined efforts of the Tuckaleechee Garden Club & the Blount County Master Gardener's. Looking forward to the Spring of 2020 to see the results of the major undertaking. A big hand for a great group of volunteers!

Inagural Invasive Plant Removal at the TRWA Sponsored by Keep Blount Beautiful

Keep Blount Beautiful selected the TRWA for their inaugural Invasive Plant Removal. Co-sponsored by: The Little River Watershed Assoc. and the Tuckaleechee Garden Club. With 15 volunteers attending the removal a a big success. What a great community get together.

Old TRWA Sign Posts Removed, New Installation Begins

In early May we started removing the old wooden posts and signage from the TRWA. Post holes were dug for the new aluminum sign posts and then cemented. Also the tree tags were attached to the Arboretum trees.

TRWA Signs Installed

The anodized aluminum tree, plant and garden signs were installed. The signs provide the tree or plant: common name, botanical name, brief info, did you know and a QR code that when used with a mobile device takes you to additional information about that tree or plant on the TRWA website. The picture is the before and after signs and posts.

Thanks to Theresa & Scott Schehr for the garden Bench Restoration & Beautification. Mark Seder & Katherine Goodwin donated a mature witch hazel & red maple tree. Debbie Dickie donated an American Beautyberry to replace the one for the Sue Tyler memorial. East Tennessee Wood Products Co,. Inc donated 5 yards of hardwood mulch.

Keep Blount Beautiful Present the Tulip Poplar Award to Mark Seder & the Tuckaleechee Garden Club

The Tulip Poplar Award was presented for the assistance provided to Keep Blount Beautiful for their first ever Invasive Plant Removal on the Townsend River Walk and Arboretum. It was a very unexpected honor.

Printable Trail Map Made Available

Mark Seder put together a map of the River Walk and Arboretum and was added to the TRWA website. The map was made by taking GPS coordinates of the trees, plants and gardens and then uploading them thru mapping software to create a fairly accurate map.

River Walk Maintenance

During the summer months there was continual maintenance on the TRWA. Most of the maintenance involved the cleaning up, weed eating and keeping the appearance of the River Walk welcoming to guests. The Town of Townsend added some of there resource to the keep of the weeds cut back.

Passionflowers Planted Behid the Pollinator Garden

Mark Seder donated and planted three passionflowers (Passiflora incarnata) behind the Pollinator and Memorial Garden. The Passion Flower (aka: maypop, wild apricot, and the ocoee) is the official Tennessee State Wildflower. It grows as a vine and because the floral parts were once said to represent aspects of the Christian crucifixion story, sometimes referred to as the Passion. The 10 petal-like parts represents the disciples of Jesus, excluding Peter and Judas; the 5 stamens the wounds Jesus received; the knob-like stigmas the nails; the fringe the crown of thorns. They are also a larval host for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly.

Endowment Grant Received from Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc.

Invasive Plant Removal in Conjunction with Keep Blount Beautiful

What a great turnout with over 24 in attendance to learn and work with: Tuckaleechee Garden Club, Keep Blount Beautiful and The Little River Watershed Association, on invasives and the cleanup of invasives. The event was capped with a picnic at the River Walk for all the volunteers. This was real community spirit.

"Cherokee Brave" Dogwood Planted in Memory of Ron Byrd

This year we lost a working partner on the TWRA, Ron Byrd. Donations were made in honor of Ron and a "Cherokee Brave" Dogwood was purchased with the donations and planted by Mark Seder.

Wildflowers Planted!
