Momma Bear Taking Down Spicebush at the TRWA
We were working on the Sensory Garden and Path this morning and a mother bear and her two cubs decided to stop by and have a bit of early lunch munching on a Spicebush filled with berries.
The TRWA is a Nature Learning Park and we are always learning. This mornings takeaway is why bears like Spicebush berries.
- Spicebush berries contain rich, fatty oils compared to sugary or watery fruits of Spring and early Summer, making them a powerful fuel source.
- The bright red fruits ripen in late Summer and Fall providing high calorie nutrition, just as bears enter hyperphagia, a period of intense feeding to prepare for winter.
Stop by the Townsend River Walk & Arboretum and observe some of the best that nature has to offer.
